Hotels, travel companies and experience providers are all competing for a share of consumer spending. And visitor attractions are increasingly joining them.

But here’s a question worth asking: just because consumers are looking for Black Friday deals, does that mean attractions need to offer them?

For some, Black Friday could be one of the most valuable promotional opportunities of the year. A chance to reach new audiences, secure bookings for quieter periods, sell memberships and get ahead of Christmas gifting.

For others, it could mean discounting tickets that visitors were already planning to buy at full price.

Imagine an attraction sells 1,000 tickets during Black Friday at 25% off. On paper, that’s a fantastic weekend of sales. But what if 700 of those visitors would have booked anyway? Has the promotion created additional demand, or simply reduced the revenue earned from existing demand?

Of course, the opposite could also be true. Without an offer, some of those visitors might never have booked at all.

So perhaps the real question isn’t whether attractions should take part in Black Friday, but what they want to achieve by doing so.

Black Friday isn’t just for retail anymore

What was once largely associated with physical products has become a much broader promotional period, with consumers considering everything from holidays to experiences.

Research published by Experian and Reward in 2025 highlighted this shift, identifying travel, experiences and wellbeing as increasingly relevant categories within the Black Friday shopping season.

For visitor attractions, that opens up some interesting possibilities.

A family day out, annual membership or behind-the-scenes experience is something people can look forward to, share with others or give as a Christmas present. And Black Friday arrives at a useful point in the calendar, when consumers are already thinking about gifting and planning for the year ahead.

But there’s a difference between consumers being interested in Black Friday deals and expecting every attraction to offer discounted admission.

Are attractions responding to genuine customer demand, or simply following a promotional calendar that was never designed around their business?

The case for taking part

Black Friday can be much more than an opportunity to sell discounted admission tickets.

An attraction with quieter periods to fill could use a targeted offer to encourage visits during those dates. Others might use the Christmas shopping period to sell gift experiences, attract new audiences or encourage visitors to commit to an annual membership.

And UK attractions are already experimenting with different approaches.

Barleylands Farm Park in Essex ran a Black Friday promotion in 2025 offering 20% off annual pass gift vouchers, selected animal experiences and birthday parties.

Rather than focusing solely on admission, the promotion covered purchases that could translate into visits and experiences well into the following year.

London Zoo also took part in Black Friday 2025, offering up to 40% off selected products in its online shop. Its campaign linked the promotion to supporting wildlife conservation, giving shoppers another reason to purchase beyond the discount itself.

Both demonstrate how Black Friday can support different commercial opportunities, from generating future visits to driving retail revenue.

And that’s worth remembering. A successful promotion doesn’t necessarily have to be the one that sells the most tickets.

But are more bookings always better?

There’s something undeniably appealing about a Black Friday sales spike. More bookings, more revenue coming in and potentially hundreds of visitors committing to an experience months before they arrive.

But how do attractions know whether that activity represents genuinely new business?

Consider two attractions running the same 20% discount. One uses it to fill quieter January dates that would otherwise have empty capacity. The other offers it across popular summer weekends that regularly sell out at full price.

Both might report a successful Black Friday campaign. But commercially, the outcomes could be very different.

And it’s not just about ticket revenue. There’s also the question of what visitors consider good value.

Research from DJS Research into value perceptions in UK leisure highlights that consumers don’t judge a day out on admission price alone. Travel costs, food, additional activities and the overall quality of the experience all contribute to whether visitors feel they’ve received good value.

A discounted ticket might help someone make the decision to visit, particularly when household budgets are stretched. But a lower price doesn’t automatically create a better-value experience.

Equally, offering a discount doesn’t necessarily devalue an attraction. A well-timed promotion might introduce a family to somewhere they’ve never visited, encourage an additional trip or make an experience accessible to people who couldn’t otherwise justify the cost.

The challenge is understanding what happens beyond the initial sale.

An attraction might see bookings surge during Black Friday, only for December sales to slow as visitors bring forward purchases they would otherwise have made later.

Or it might find that promotional visitors spend more on food, retail and experiences during their visit, increasing the overall value of those bookings.

Both outcomes matter. And neither is necessarily visible from Black Friday ticket sales alone.

Does Black Friday have to mean cheaper tickets?

When we think about Black Friday, the obvious starting point is a discount. But attractions have other ways to create a compelling offer without simply reducing the price of general admission.

Take annual memberships, for example. A promotion could offer an additional month, a guest pass or an exclusive experience, giving visitors another reason to commit to a longer-term relationship.

Or consider experience bundles. A theme park could combine admission with a premium experience, while a heritage attraction might offer an exclusive tour or event alongside entry.

There’s also the question of when people visit. Rather than offering discounts across every available date, an attraction could focus its promotion on experiences with capacity to fill, protecting full-price demand during busier periods.

None of these approaches is necessarily better than a straightforward ticket discount. For some attractions, reducing admission prices might be exactly the right decision.

The most compelling offer isn’t always the cheapest. It’s the one that gives customers a reason to buy while supporting what the attraction is trying to achieve commercially.

So, should your attraction take part?

Black Friday might be one of the biggest promotional opportunities of the year for your attraction. Or it might simply be an expensive way of selling tickets you would have sold anyway.

The difference isn’t necessarily the size of the discount. It’s understanding who you’re trying to reach, what you want them to do and whether the promotion creates value beyond a weekend sales spike.

That might mean targeting first-time visitors, encouraging bookings during quieter periods or using what you know about existing audiences to promote experiences they’re more likely to be interested in.

And perhaps that’s the real opportunity for attraction marketers: making more informed commercial decisions rather than treating every visitor as a potential Black Friday bargain hunter.

The question isn’t whether your attraction can afford to miss Black Friday, but whether you can demonstrate that taking part is worthwhile.

Black Friday is becoming a bigger opportunity for visitor attractions, but does offering a discount actually drive new demand or simply reduce revenue from visitors who would have booked anyway?

[2108
1688
post-264757","blog","type-blog","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","cat_industry-leisure-entertainment-en-gb","cat_topic-strategy-en-gb
["GET
