Read for Good uses Spotler to send targeted, engaging emails at scale, helping a small team communicate effectively with schools, donors and supporters

Read for Good believes that reading for pleasure can change lives. Children who read for fun are more likely to grow up happy, confident and fulfilled. That belief has been at the heart of the charity since it was founded in 1984 by teacher and author Brough Girling, originally under the name Readathon®

Today, Read for Good

  • supplies books to all 30 major children’s hospitals in the UK,
  • supports schools and community organisations with Brilliant Boxes of Books
  • and has worked with almost every Children’s Laureate since the role was introduced in 1999.

Their first-ever Honorary Chair was Roald Dahl.

The challenge: Big audiences, but a small team

Read for Good is a small organisation with a wide and diverse community. Their stakeholders include contacts from 25,000 UK schools, as well as donors, supporters and partners. Effective communication is essential, but it needs to be:

  • cost-effective,
  • easy to use for non-technical teams,
  • and tightly integrated with Salesforce, their CRM.

“As a small team with big ambition, we needed a solution that worked reliably without requiring technical or development expertise.”

A user-friendly email platform that integrates with Salesforce

Read for Good began using Spotler’s email platform around 2016, shortly after adopting Salesforce. Initially supported by their communications agency Oomph, they later became an independent Spotler client.

Spotler stood out because it offered:

  • a seamless Salesforce integration
  • a user-friendly interface for communications professionals,
  • and the ability to send large-scale email campaigns without enterprise-level costs.

How Read for Good uses Spotler

Read for Good segments its data within Salesforce and uses Spotler to create tailored email campaigns for its different audiences. Through these campaigns, the organisation keeps stakeholders informed, encourages engagement and inspires action across its community. From schools and teachers to donors and supporters, each group receives messaging that is relevant, timely and aligned with their interests.

Results

The digital communications landscape is constantly changing, and capturing attention, especially from busy teachers and parents, is increasingly challenging. For Read for Good, email remains a cost-effective way to stay visible, share high-quality content and maintain long-term engagement.

One particularly successful campaign was a year-in-review email, which summarised the previous year’s impact using key statistics and results. The campaign achieved a 35% open rate (CTO) and saw higher click-through rates, supported by clearer structure and improved email design within Spotler.

“We know we’re probably not using all of Spotler’s features yet and that’s exciting. There’s still plenty of opportunity to improve results even further.”
