Bulk email is what it sounds like. One email, sent to many people at once. It’s the kind of message you might send through a newsletter tool or email marketing platform to reach a large group of recipients with the same content. Think product updates, promotional offers, event invitations, or company announcements. If you’ve ever received a “Dear Subscriber” message, you’ve probably seen bulk email in action.

In short, bulk email is:

  • sent to many people at once, typically via email marketing software
  • designed for scale, not personal reply (think updates, newsletters, promotions)
  • relying on well-maintained lists, thoughtful messaging, and compliance practices

For marketers, bulk email is one of the most direct and consistent ways to communicate with a large audience. Unlike personalised one-to-one messages or behaviour-triggered automation, bulk emails are sent in batches, usually to a complete list or a broad segment. They’re often scheduled in advance and designed to broadcast a clear, consistent message.

Deliverability is especially important when it comes to bulk sends. Email tools help maintain sender reputation and follow rules set by email providers (like Gmail or Outlook), which try to filter out spam. That means marketers must follow best practices, such as using transparent opt-in processes, offering an obvious unsubscribe link, and avoiding misleading subject lines.
